WandaVision Star Paul Bettany Could Make History at the Emmys This Sunday

During the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony last weekend, which honors the best of television in the craft/technical categories, WandaVision was able to snag three awards. The MCU series is also nominated in several categories at the main ceremony this Sunday including the coveted Outstanding Limited Series. So you might be wondering: Does the show has a chance to win in any of its categories? Well, actually yes. But we're going to focus on one that has a high chance to win according to Emmy experts and could make history if it actually happens.

According to the odds at the awards website GoldDerby, Paul Bettany, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his terrific turn as Vision in the series, is the one who is predicted by the experts to win the category. If that happens, he would be the first actor to win an Emmy for playing an MCU hero. That would be exciting as industry awards don't commonly hand out the honor to superhero shows, let alone in a major category like this. But why is Bettany likely to win the category?

Besides the Vision actor, also nominated are Hugh Grant (The Undoing), Ewan McGregor (Halston), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), and Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton). Grant is in second place at the odds, but his hurdle is The Undoing did not do well at the nominations. McGregor, meanwhile, is in third place. His series Halston received a few crafts nominations, but none of them ended up winning last weekend and there was no buzz on the series so the voters might not have even seen his performance.

Then there's also the two Hamilton nominees. Odom Jr., who won the Tony for the role in the original Broadway run, is the one who is most likely to win among the two if we follow the odds and statistics. Although the possibility of a vote split between him and Miranda is still imminent since both of them are beloved. There's also the fact that voters might not want to reward a Hamilton performance since it was from a filmed performance from five years ago.

As for Bettany, he has one advantage that trumps all his fellow nominees: he is the only nominee from a series that is nominated in Outstanding Limited Series. WandaVision received 23 Emmy nominations which means that the Television Academy did see the series and love it. Also, Bettany wasn't just playing the Vision that we know. He was playing different versions of the character inspired by decades of sitcom history. He also played another Vision during the final episode. He has all the elements that make him the frontrunner in his category. If he does win, it would be historical for Marvel and the comic book genre.

Meanwhile, his co-star Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda Maximoff, has a tough hill to climb in Lead Actress as she is against the likes of Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit), who have a stronger buzz. Kathryn Hahn, who plays Agatha Harkness, is nominated for Supporting Actress and she is also considered as the frontrunner in her category. If they both prevail, that means two MCU actors will make history during the night.

Take note that this is all just a prediction by the experts so it might go the other way. But either way, it's great to see that the series is getting some love at this level. Winning an award is just the icing on the cake and puts more legitimacy to the arts and crafts of the comic book genre.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards is set to broadcast live this Sunday night on CBS.
