Why These Two Avengers Didn’t Fight In Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War saw the Earth's Mightiest Heroes' ideologies clashing with each other from the beginning, but it wasn't until the major battle at the Leipzig/Halle Airport that we saw the different match-ups between the Avengers that we never thought we'd see. As many epic battles there was between different Avengers in the movie, there were two characters who never got to face off with each other – Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Chris Evans' Captain America.

In an interview with Fandango, Civil War scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained why they left that part out. Markus explained:

There was a good fight between Captain America and Black Widow that we lost mainly due to time.

With all the characters Markus and McFeely had to put into consideration, as well as the fact that they had to smoothly introduce three new characters into the fold, it's no wonder that there would be time constraint issues. That said, I think the duo still managed to introduce and develop that many characters at 147 minutes.

I also don't think it was too much of a let down that Steve and Natasha didn't fight. The tension between the two have already been explored in other ways. McFeely said:

[Cap and Black Widow] clearly have a deep relationship even though they're clearly on opposite sides, and you never know how many times you need to hit that over the course of the movie. I think it works without this fight, but we certainly didn't know if it would.

It was obvious that Black Widow had been torn between whether she would follow Captain America or not. In the end, she chose to look out for him and even allowed him to escape the battle at the Leipzig/Halle Airport. The two also had a close relationship unseen in the other Avengers, and it would be odd seeing them wanting to kill each other.
