Why is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse So Faithful to the Comics? Because They Used THIS For Research

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been getting a ton of positive reviews, making fans both excited and nervous about this animated feature film. Excited because this means we're in for a quality film and nervous because it might not live up to these expectations that have been given to them. Still, it seems to show that the people behind this film love them some Spider-Man lore and did everything they could to make these characters stay true to their comic book selves.

Phil Lord, the film's co-director, told Fandango that they made sure these characters were close to their comic book counterparts by reading comics and even looking up wikis. Whether that's just Wikipedia or the unofficial Marvel wikia wasn't made clear but it is an interesting way to say that "we did our research."

"We wanted everyone to be canonical. We didn't want to make anything up, because we felt like it would feel like we had a Great Gazoo to the movie or something like Scrappy Doo. We wanted to make sure that they all were originating from the comic, so we just sort of went to Marvel Wiki and having read the books and some of the event crossover books, we thought that these were characters that were as diverse as possible [and] had as many different colors to them."

There will definitely be fans who say that trusting wikis can be a bit tricky since there is no one who can stop you from editing these articles and adding some wacky lie that can trick gullible people. Still, the fact that the two directors got Miles being inspired by the death of his world's Peter Parker right shows that we shouldn't be too dismissive about their research process.

While we won't know how this movie will do in the box office until mid-December, Sony seems to be confident in this side-franchise now that the movie has gotten great reviews. There are some plans to make a sequel that focuses solely on Miles Morales and an all-female Spider-Women film that has Spider-Gwen as the lead.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is coming to theaters on December 14.
