It's a sad day for fans of the series 1899. Unfortunately, it was just revealed that Netflix has pulled the plug on the show and will not be renewing it for a second season.
This was earlier revealed by the show's creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar via the latter's Instagram account.
The post reads:
"With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don't turn out the way you planned."
What Was 1899 Story About?
The short-lived show was about a group of European immigrants on board a boat as they traveled to New York during the 19th Century. The passengers had different backgrounds but were all hoping for a fresh start in their new destination.
The show had a total of eight episodes.
Why Did Netflix Cancel 1899 After One Season?
While many initially thought it would be a horror film, the series actually turned out to have a supernatural and sci-fi twist. And this disappointed a lot of its viewers who were actually starting to get invested in the series. Instead of getting hooked on the show, they felt like they were cheated into watching the story.
Wired believes that the decision to cancel 1899 after just one season "comes down to the data." This is further supported by a 2018 article on Vulture that explains how Netflix decides upon the renewal of a show based on a "28-day viewership."
And while the show initially drew in lots of viewers, the twist at the end of the series left many disappointed. Those who were still getting hooked to watching the show decided not to proceed anymore.
