Jason Grace and Piper McLean were one of the main couples to emerge from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, specifically in the sequel novel series, The Heroes of Olympus.
Their love story initially started as a lie. At the time, Piper developed a crush on Jason during the first book, The Lost Hero.
This eventually grows into something official and the two get romantically involved with each other once The Demigod Diaries storyline comes into view.
Unfortunately, as smooth sailing as their relationship had been in its bloom, The Burning Maze is where Jason and Piper break up in the series.
Jason and Piper's Bleak Reason For Breaking Up
The Percy Jackson books had Piper stating her reason for Hera's trick: "Things change. People change. Jason and me—we started out oddly. Hera kind of messed with our heads, made us think we shared a past we didn't share."
Hera, aka the Greek goddess of marriage, had forced Jason and Piper to bloom into something more than friends. While Piper took this to offense, Jason admittedly still has feelings for her.

Jason Broke Up With Piper to Protect Her
Another fan explained their theory that Jason potentially initiated the break-up, not the other way around.
Considering that he knows about the prophecy about the possible deathbed that's waiting for either him or Piper, he knows he has to keep her safe.
And what other way could he possibly do that than by pushing Piper away from him? Overall, this led to his eventual death in the books, which would make their love story all the more heartbreaking to hear.
