Since episode 19 when Maomao saved him, many fans have been wondering who tried to kill Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries.

It’s not yet clear who was the mastermind behind this plot, but the anime’s 20th and latest episode makes it clear who is involved. It’s none other than the mysterious character that Maomao has seen in the outer court.

Unlike the first half which featured Maomao solving cases related to the emperor's consorts, The Apothecary Diaries season 2 part 2 saw her investigating seemingly unrelated mysteries.

In episode 19, Maomao realizes that the cases she has solved previously are all connected, and she rightly deduces that someone’s life is in danger.

It turns out that the one being targeted is Jinshi. Maomao arrived in the nick of time to save him, at the cost of some injuries.

The show’s 20th episode reveals that Maomao has an idea why Jinshi was present in the ceremony, though as always, she decided not to think about it lest she get dragged into more intrigue.

That didn’t stop her from getting involved though, as Maomao soon investigates the supposed death of Suirei. It turns out that Suirei faked her death and escaped.

Because of Suirei seemingly being connected with the recent cases, some fans think that she was the one who tried to kill Jinshi, though her motivations are unclear.

Meanwhile, others believe that while she had a hand in it, there is another mastermind that has yet to be revealed. Some also think that the arrival of the new concubine, Loulan, is related to the events.

Along with theories about Jinshi’s would-be killer, fans are also buzzing about Jinshi and his identity.

As revealed in the latest episode, Jinshi drinks suppression medicine, which Gaoshun says can lead to permanent impotence. This means Jinshi is not an actual eunuch.

Coupled with the fact that Jinshi took part in a purification ceremony, it’s clear to many fans that Jinshi is a highborn individual.

The most popular theory is that Jinshi is the son of the current emperor and Ah-Duo, the previous Pure Consort.

This would make him the heir apparent to the throne, which was implied quite strongly in the anime’s first half.

Fans will have to wait for confirmation of these theories. At least, the wait won’t be too long, as The Apothecary Diaries episode 21 will be released this weekend on Crunchyroll.
