The final season of The Flash only has five episodes left, and it still hasn’t revealed its final villain for Season 9. Throughout the first few episodes, Barry Allen/The Flash faced off with another evil speedster, The Red Death.

While teasers and promos for Season 9 focused on Red Death as the final season’s villain, the evil speedster only remained a threat for a few episodes. After defeating the Red Death, The Flash Season 9 has given us filler episodes, with plots that aren’t crucial to the series’ ending.

For instance, the final Supergirl crossover focused on Nia and her powers. It had nothing much to do with The Flash Season 9’s ongoing story. And the recent episode, titled “Partners in Time”, have Iris and Barry dealing with time anomalies after a mold inspection at S.T.A.R. Labs. It didn’t give us anything further about the storyline for the final season.

Following the cancelation of the other Arrowverse series (such as Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow), The Flash Season 9 has been used as an opportunity to bring back other Arrowverse characters for a proper goodbye. We have already seen Batwoman’s Ryan Wilder (both as the vigilante Batwoman and the Red Death) and Supergirl’s Nia Nal/Dreamer. The Scarlet Speedster is still expected to cross paths with more Arrowverse characters such as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, John Diggle, Wally West/Kid Flash, Jay Garrick, and Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash.

The trailer for the final Arrow crossover teased the return of a former Flash villain, Ramsey Rosso/Bloodwork, but even he may appear in one episode only and not serve as the final villain of The Flash Season 9.

With only five episodes left, The Flash still has much to tell and many questions to address, like who is the final villain of The Flash Season 9?

It can be recalled that in The Flash Season 8 finale, a blue crystal was shown at a laboratory in 2049. This sets up the Arrowverse’s Cobalt Blue, who could be The Flash’s final villain. In the DC comics, Malcolm Thawne a.k.a Cobalt Blue is the lost twin brother of Barry Allen. He was raised by Hugo and Charlene Thawne, making him an ancestor for Eobard Thawne a.k.a the Reverse-Flash. In The Flash series, Eddie Thawne is also Eobard Thawne’s ancestor.

The Season 8 finale, along with set photos suggests that Cobalt Blue is indeed The Flash’s final villain. It can be recalled that in the Season 8 finale, Iris mentioned that the Negative Speed Force will find a new avatar and Barry replied that he will be ready. Thus, Cobalt Blue could be the Negative Speed Force’s next avatar.

However, with only five episodes left, and one episode being the final Arrow crossover, Cobalt Blue may not get the same slow-developing story that the other evil speedsters in the show had, like Reverse-Flash, Zoom, and Savitar.

Speaking of evil speedsters, it was confirmed that Matt Letscher will return as Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash and Teddy Sears as Hunter Zolomon/Zoom. Barry indeed will be facing a lot of evil speedsters in the finale.
