Who Are Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge Playing in Solo: A Star Wars Story?

e just got a ton of reveals for Solo: A Star Wars Story, and though we get to see a bunch of new characters, the only ones who got names are Emilia Clarke's (Qi'Ra) and Woody Harrelson's (Beckett). Thanks to Jedi News, we now also know the names for Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character as well as Thandie Newton's.

As it was rumored, Waller-Bridge is playing the droid L3-37. Some are guessing that she's a stand-in for a Legends droid character that used to work with Han Solo, but based on the trailers, I'm starting to think that she's either works for Qi'Ra or Lando. We know that Lando has his own droid servant in Empire Strikes Back, so it's a safe guess that L3 is an earlier version of Lobot.

As for Newton, her character is named Val, and though it wasn't confirmed in the teaser, some speculate that she's a member of the Imperial army; a BTS image with director Ron Howard fuels the speculation. I'm guessing she, like Bodie from Rogue One, is an Imperial defector, and will join Beckett's "heist" of some sort that was teased in the trailer.

I have no doubt we'll know more about these characters before the movie hits theaters. What is Star Wars if we didn't get elaborate backstories for every single character onscreen?

Solo: A Star Wars Story comes out May 25.
