Praise be! The Handmaid's Tale has been confirmed to return for another season. And the best news is: we already know when it's coming out! The show will be continuing where it left off and adding in more drama to the dystopian series.

The fourth season premiered in May 2021 and ever since then, people have been wondering when a fifth season will be released. If you're an avid fan, here's what you need to know about The Handmaid's Tale Season 5.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 5 Release Date

Back in 2020, Hulu announced that The Handmaid's Tale has been renewed for a fifth season. This is also the same time they revealed the released date of the fourth season.

The renewal doesn't really come as a surprise, especially since the show is one of Hulu's most popular series. Apart from that, it is a major awards contender. In fact, the show (adapted by Margaret Atwood's best-selling novel) has won numerous awards. And in 2021 alone, the show got 21 nominations from the Emmy's.

Despite not winning any awards from those nominations, The Handmaid's Tale continues to be an in-demand show. And this is precisely why the producers are determined to continue the show.

In the announcement, showrunner Bruce Miller said: "We are thrilled to be able to continue to tell these stories with our incredible cast and crew, and can't wait to be back on the air."

So when will The Handmaid's Tale Season 5 be back on Hulu? The answer is on September 14, 2022.

Hulu revealed that the show will air in the US during this date and will be available in the UK soon after.

With how The Handmaid's Tale Season 4 ended, we can expect the fifth season to have a lot of drama too. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller talked about his plans for the fifth season:

"I have to say I would have had very different ideas before the pandemic. I mean, we talked about it, and Lizzie and I have talked about it, and the writing staff and I have talked about it extensively about where we're going precisely, but I do feel like after this year, it's a good time to reassess.

So I know where I am in the story, and I do feel like we're kind of reaching kind of a pivot point, but whether that's the end or not, I don't know. It just feels like it's a good time to reassess what you were thinking, just because the story world has opened up because the real world has changed so much."

There's no word yet on what the showrunner plans to do on Season 5 but we expect it to be a hit nonetheless.

We expect the main cast of The Handmaid's Tale to return for the fifth season:

  • Elisabeth Moss (as June)
  • Ann Dowd (as Aunt Lydia)
  • Samira Wiley (as Moira)
  • Yvonne Strahovski (as Serena Waterford)
  • Madeline Brewer (as Janine)
  • O-T Fagbenle (as Luke)
  • Max Minghella (as Nick)
  • Bradley Whitford (as Commander Lawrence)
  • McKenna Grace (Mrs. Keyes)

One actress we won't expect to see in The Handmaid's Tale Season 5 is Alexis Bledel (as Emily). Bledel spoke with Variety Magazine and revealed her decision to leave the show before the start of the fifth season.

“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ at this time. I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
