After a hiatus, Good Trouble Season 4 has returned to our screens on Disney+, Freeform, and Hulu (depending on where you live). If you're a fan of The Coterie and its tenants, you'll likely be asking if it will be returning for a fifth season. And right now, we've got some updates on the show even as it still has a weekly air date.
Will There Be a Good Trouble Season 5?
So has Good Trouble been renewed for a fifth installment? The good news is that the creators have decided to renew the show for a fifth season.
As reported by Deadline, this announcement was given by Freefrom and Onyx Collective president, Tara Duncan at the virtual TCA press tour session earlier this month.
Fans are still waiting for what happens to the Foster sisters, Callie (played by Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (played by Cierra Ramirez). Unfortunately, Callie already left Good Trouble Season 4 so it's still unsure what will happen to the show with her departure.
This is probably a reason why the creators of the show delayed making their decision on a fifth installment. They may still be waiting for the public's reception in Callie's absence.
Based on its history though, the creators usually give an announcement on the fate of the show halfway through the season. Sometimes, they do it after the final episode. With the recent announcement, however, we have reason to celebrate since we get to know what happens to Callie and Jamie in DC. Plus, Callie's return to the show would definitely be something to look forward to in future seasons.
Potential Good Trouble Season 5 Release Date
Upon this writing, it’s still too early to expect when Good Trouble Season 5 will be released. The decision to renew the show was just recently made. So this means there's still no material to work with. This also means that there's no way to guess a release date at this time. We still have to wait for further news on whether production has started or not.
It's possible that Good Trouble Season 5 may premiere sometime in early to mid-2023, just like its previous season did. But then again, this is merely a prediction at this point. We'll update this post once more information becomes available.
Good Trouble Season 5 Story: What Is It About?
Good Trouble is actually a spin-off series from The Fosters. The first season aired on January 8, 2019 with 13 episodes. It was created by Joanna Johnson, Peter Paige, and Bradley Bredeweg. Johnson is also the showrunner and an executive producer of the show. Other executive producers include Christine Sacani, Greg Gugliotta, Cierra Ramirez, Benny Medina, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Jennifer Lopez.
The show follows sisters Callie (played by Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (played by Cierra Ramirez) as they move to Los Angeles to pursue their chosen careers. The two move into an apartment complex known as The Coterie. There, they begin to meet friends and acquaintances from different backgrounds yet also in the pursuit of their dreams.
It's possible that Good Trouble Season 5 will return to pick up from the last episode Wake Up From Your Reverie. In this episode, we see Davia (played by Emma Hunton) go on a date with a new character. The episode also gives us a glimpse into cancel culture, as the FCGs become victim to it. Joaquin (played by Bryan Craig) obtains new details on his sister's captor. Mariana offers to help.
Since Callie left the show early in the season, we can't help but wonder if she'll be coming back in the fifth installment. Unfortunately, Maia Mitchell said her goodbyes on social media: "it is time to start a new chapter and bid farewell to Good Trouble."
The 28-year-old actress spoke to People magazine and shared her decision on why she left the show: "The pandemic was really hard for me. I know I'm so privileged and I was so lucky to be able to work, but it also meant that I was separated from my family for 18 months. And there was something about not being able to see them if something happened, just the knowledge that you couldn't get on a plane and see each other, was really hard. I just had to be with them."
In an interview with Variety, the showrunner confirmed Mitchell's exit from the show. “In the finale episode of Season 3, there were so many stories that we’re trying to serve and I wanted to devote an entire episode to her. She was delightful and lovely and said she’ll come back from Australia to do them. She’s always going to be part of the family, and I don’t think it’s the last we’ll ever see of Callie. Callie’s journey is happening off camera, but we’ll catch up with her.”
While Mitchell has since been spotted back in the US after her farewell, many can't help but wonder if she'll be returning to Good Trouble for future episodes. Hopefully, she makes an appearance in one of the episodes of Good Trouble Season 5.
