Seven Kings Must Die takes place after the death of King Edward. Aethelstan’s (King Edward’s eldest son) claim to the throne is challenged, with Uhtred once again stepping up for peace in the hopes of uniting England.

Seven Kings Must Die takes place after The Last Kingdom Season 5, which ended with Uhtred reclaiming his ancestral home of Bebbanburg and becoming the Lord of Northumbria. Edward’s achievements brought Alfred’s dream of a united England a step closer, but Uhtred claimed that Northumbria’s lands will remain Northumbria’s alone after he struck a bargain with King Constantine to ensure peace. The Last Kingdom Season 5 also set up Aethelstan, a central character in Seven Kings Must Die.

King Edward and his army fought the Scots at Bebbanburg after Aethelhelm (King Edward’s father-in-law) forged an alliance with King Constantine to fight him in exchange for Aelfwynn’s (Aethelflaed’s daughter) hand in marriage.

With the support of the Dane troops (thanks to Uhtred and Stiorra), King Edward and his army defeated the Scots. Uhtred was also able to fight his cousin Wihtgar and claim Bebbanburg, his ancestral home.

Even after the battle was over, King Constantine tried to negotiate for longer peace with Uhtred. He said that he would acknowledge Uhtred as Lord of Bebbanburg and his authority over the lands around it, but in exchange for King Edward not ruling over Bebbanburg.

Later on, King Edward approached Uhtred and thanked him, thinking England was finally made whole and the Scottish claim forever defeated. However, Uhtred revealed that Constantine withdrew his claim to the lands because Uhtred offered not to cede the lands to King Edward. Instead, the lands “will remain between the two, sworn to neither, to ensure peace.”

This angered King Edward and he asked why Uhtred would choose now to betray the House of Wessex. Uhtred replied that he betrayed nothing and that the House of Wessex will unite England eventually, but King Edward isn’t the man who would do so.

The warrior then emphasized that the man who would unify the country should be a figure behind which the people can stand together as one. But King Edward has shown that he was not that man as he has sown discord between Saxon and Dane.

Seven Kings Must Die follows the events of The Last Kingdom series which focused on the Kingdom of Wessex and the ongoing feud with the Vikings. The upcoming film also focuses on Aethelstan, the first king to rule over England.
