The first season of the MCU animated series What If...? was a success. It wasn't as highly received as the MCU shows before, but it was still beloved by fans as it gave us an alternative look at some of our favorite characters and moments throughout the 13-year long history of the franchise. But which episode resonated with the audience? A recent report has revealed the answer to that.
According to The Direct, citing information they obtained from Whip Media, they were able to confirm that the series was a hit with the audience and generated considerable engagement throughout its run. They also found out that the most popular episode of the season is the ninth episode titled "What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath?" which was also the season finale. Here's the full ranking according to the report:
- "What If... the Watcher Broke His Oath?"
- "What If... Ultron Won?"
- "What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?"
- "What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?"
- "What If... Zombies?!"
- "What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?"
- "What If... the World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?"
- "What If... Kilmonger Rescued Tony Stark?"
- "What If... Thor Were an Only Child?"
It is not surprising that the season finale was the most popular episode of the season. After all, it was an episode where the main characters from the previous episodes teamed up. If you look at the MCU's box office history, the Avengers films are always the top grossers. It's the same case here in the series where a team-up episode became the most popular one. Also, there is the fact that it is the season finale and the previous episode ended on a cliffhanger so the audience was curious to know how the conflict will be resolved and the season overall will wrap.
It is also worth pointing out that the least popular episode is the one with Party Thor. We can't say if that indicates the quality of the episode or the fans' response to it. Although it is a sign that perhaps the audience was not interested to see the Avenger as a silly partygoer and not saving the world or maybe they just didn't like that it was a purely comedic episode. But if you look at the responses from those who have seen it, most of them pretty much enjoyed the episode somehow.
The new data proved that most of the audience liked and enjoyed the first season of the series despite the divisive reactions to some of the episodes. Fortunately, a second season is already on its way and we'll get to see another batch of stories from the other universes.
The first season of What If...? is currently streaming on Disney+.
