Heads up! Maple is back for the second season of the BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense anime to continue her fun adventures inside New World Online (NWO) along with her friends. But with everything that happened so far in the first season, what game is the Bofuri series based on?

The first season of BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense aired on January 2020, with a total of 12 episodes.

The anime was produced by Silver Link, the same studio that produced The Misfit of Demon King Academy, Wise Man’s Grandchild, and The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!

What Is Bofuri All About?

BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, So I'll Max Out My Defense, or simply Bofuri, is a fantasy and adventure anime with a VR MMORPG theme. It is based on Yuumikan's light novel of the same name, which was illustrated by Koin. So far, the light novel has been published in 14 volumes.

The Bofuri series follows Kaede Honjo, a cheerful, carefree, and pleasant young girl who decides to play a new VR MMORPG game called New World Online after being encouraged by her close friend, Risa Shiromine.

After logging in, Kaede adopts the in-game name (ign) Maple, as her Japanese name literally translates to "maple."

Of all the classes in the game, Maple chose to be a defensive player, also known as a tanker, because she does not want to feel pain when attacked by monsters or other players.

While Kaede is new to VR MMORPG games, her unconventional methods have helped her gain strength to the point where she can complete dungeons by herself, even defeating boss monsters.

Not only was Kaede able to level up quickly, but she also used every status she received to boost her defense (vitality). Kaede, after all, believes that her impenetrable defense will enable her to defeat stronger opponents.

To this day, it is unknown what game the Bofuri series is based on, given that there are numerous MMORPG games with the same style as the anime's New World Online.

From the chance to choose classes to the opportunity to customize a player's stats, New World Online appears to be a rip-off of Ragnarok Online, SaGa Games, Mabinogi, or even Maple Story.

Surprisingly, there’s a real New World Online game developed by Amazon Games Orange County, which was published by Amazon Games and released on September 20, 2021.

It is also an MMORPG game without the VR of the Bofuri series, and while the two games have the same name, their synopses and settings are significantly different.

On the contrary, a Reddit user believes that some of the events in the Bofuri series are very similar to those in the MMORPG Mabinogi.

Both Maple's demon transformation and Paladin's transformation in Mabinogi are similar in some ways.

If the New World Online VR MMORPG game in the Bofuri series is remade in real life, it will be fun and enjoyable to play.
