The highly anticipated IT prequel series Welcome to Derry has been given a full season order by HBO Max, the network announced today.

The story of Welcome to Derry will take place in the same universe as Stephen King's classic novel It, in which Pennywise the Clown returns to Derry every 27 years to feast on the town's children.

Welcome to Derry Delves Deeper on Stephen King's Novel

The events of IT, released in 2017, take place in the town of Derry, which has been plagued by Pennywise the Clown for years. Welcome to Derry is believed to detail this history.

The show's actual plot is being kept under wraps, but hints were dropped when the show was first announced to be in the works. It will also add to the events of the two recent film adaptations by director Andy Muschietti.

Exciting news for fans of Muschietti's adaptations is that he'll be back for the series. In addition to assisting in the creation of the story, he will direct multiple episodes.

With Welcome to Derry, Muschietti, his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti, and Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs will adapt an original story rooted in King's world. Moreover, Fuchs will serve as co-showrunner alongside Brad Caleb Kane and write the pilot episode.

Red balloons all around!"

HBO Max's Head of Original Content, Sarah Aubrey, had this to say regarding the upcoming series: "We are thrilled to continue this iconic franchise with the brilliant Andy and Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs, and Brad Caleb Kane. This prequel will expand the IT storytelling canvas and bring fans deeper into the terrifying, mesmerizing town of Derry."
