According to Deadline, CBS wants to put a new spin on the Sherlock Holmes story by making Dr. John Watson the main character in a new Watson TV series. Craig Sweeny, who wrote and executive produced Elementary, will take on the writing duties.

CBS Takes Another Spin at Sherlock Holmes and John Watson

Elementary premiered on CBS in 2012. The modern procedural follows Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), a sober former Scotland Yard consultant who now helps the NYPD solve crimes. Dr. Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu, serves as Holmes' sober companion at the start of the show.

The drama has 154 episodes over seven seasons, and both viewers and critics gave it high marks. There was even a debate at the time that Elementary was the better Sherlock Holmes adaption compared to the BBC series Sherlock, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman because of the chemistry between Miller and Liu.

In general, the decision to cast Liu was lauded since it provided a worthwhile take on the iconic relationship between Holmes and Watson.

CBS hopes to uncover a new entry into Doyle's works by making John the focal point and killing off his renowned friend—at least initially. There's no telling now if the Watson TV series will work, but considering that CBS has a trusted reputation with procedurals and given the past run of Elementary, there are grounds to be optimistic about Watson.
