Watchmen Star Tim Blake Nelson Reveals The Core Goal For The Hit Series

Damon Lindelof's Watchmen series on HBO might have gotten a pretty rotten Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film has been enjoying a wave of positive critic reviews, and it seems like the strong Critic Score continues to soar as the series goes on.

Speaking in an interview with GQ to talk about his role in The Watchmen, Tim Blake Nelson discusses the series, saying that the live-action adaptation of Alan Moore's comics tells a story about humanity. According to Nelson, the core tension of The Watchmen isn't because of the masks, but because of the true nature of vigilantism – an act of revenge.

"The thing that Damon (Lindelof) is examining, in the show Watchmen, is what revenge can allow for," he shares. "Not just in the vengeful person, but in the tit for tat response to revenge. How revenge and vigilantism build on themselves. Then, finally, what it brings out in someone to wear a mask."

In Watchmen, Nelson plays the part of Looking Glass, a police officer in Tulsa who was actually in ground zero during the Squid attack in New York. The series has revealed a complex story for the character where Wade Tillman decides to give in to the temptation of comfort, allowing himself to betray his closest friend on the Force just so that he can learn about the truth and finally be free of his psychological trauma.

We can only imagine how the story continues for Wade and for Angela Abar (Regina King) in the series.

Watchmen airs every Monday on HBO.
