Joker Director Talks His Original DC Black Pitch

If you've followed the news, you'll know that Joker director Todd Phillips had intended for the film to be a new label for DC films called ‘DC Black.' While nothing official has been announced about the brand, Phillips goes on to talk about his original pitch to WB.

Talking to Deadline, Phillips explained how he planned to make DC Black as to give WB an avenue to do deep character studies like Joker while at the same time make the kid-friendly films like Aquaman and Shazam!.

"I said, ‘This will be the first movie, and then we'll get this director to do that, and this director to do this, and we'll call it DC Black, and Joker will be the first film. In a weird way, it gives you two bites of the apple, of these characters," he shared. "You can do these kinds of down-and-dirty character studies over here, and still do the DC Universe over there. To which they said, ‘Okay, calm down, you're not starting a label here at Warners, but this is interesting. Go write this and tell us what you're thinking.'"

Though the DC Black label didn't get an official greenlight yet, I'm sure Joker's billion-dollar gross will certainly have WB considering it for real. While Marvel has no doubt dominated the market with their kid-friendly fair, DC has the opportunity to be more experimental with their movies—with one experiment definitely paying off handsomely.

For now we don't know how WB plans to push forward. Hopefully they now have a restored faith in darker films. Personally I have my fingers crossed that they'll finally consider releasing Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League, and after the buzz, the movie got last week (and the new photos that Snyder has been posting), all I have is hope that an announcement is coming soon.
