Even prior to the crossover's release, showrunner Marc Guggenheim has already been teasing huge surprises to come in the five-part event. But Crisis on Infinite Earths pulled off an epic cameo that no one even saw coming. And as it turns out, it was actually a last-minute request.

In a recent interview with Variety, Guggenheim revealed that they were already wrapped on Arrow and the whole crossover. "We were in post and some episodes were locked, and some were soft-locked," he said. "I got a phone call from [Warner Bros. boss] Peter Roth, saying, ‘I know you're locked, but can you put Ezra into the crossover?' And I said, ‘Yes.'"

Roth asked how they would make the cameo happen since the crossover is already wrapped. But Guggenheim said if Roth is actually telling him that Ezra Miller could be in the crossover, he could make it happen. He then called The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace, who then called Grant Gustin. "Because the one thing that was our only concern was the thought we didn't want to do it unless Grant was 100 percent on board with it. And he was," Guggenheim explained.

Gustin was "incredibly enthusiastic" so they went ahead and got Miller on the phone and told him about the scene that Guggenheim wrote. "And we just went," he said. "We put together a unit of the Flash crew on the Flash set."

Guggenheim said they were surprised that no one noticed that Miller was in Vancouver. He also admitted that they appreciate the crew for not leaking any information, which is why they were able to keep the cameo a surprise. In fact, it was well-hidden that even the cast weren't aware of it, including Melissa Benoist.

Miller is expected to return in an upcoming The Flash film which is slated for release on July 1, 2022. All episodes of Crisis on Infinite Earths are available to stream on The CW.
