A lot of fans were thrilled over Evan Peters' jaw-dropping Marvel Cinematic Universe casting as "Pietro Maximoff" in WandaVision and although he didn't turn out to be the person everyone thought he was going to be, it was still mindblowing to see the actor reprise the role he pretty much made famous over at the Foxverse.
Now, a lot of people were on the impression that Peters' casting has something to do with the MCU opening up the portal to the multiverse but that's not the case, for now, at least. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer finally broke her silence about the rumors surrounding the casting and offered a surprising explanation regarding the involvement of the actor in the hit Marvel show.
According to the WandaVision writer, while they were very much aware of Evan's connection to Quicksilver and Fox's now-defunct X-Men franchise, there's a deeper and much more tragic meaning behind his casting that goes beyond the fact that it's meta. In a recent conversation with Empire Magazine's film podcast, Schaeffer explains that there's actually an emotional motivation for it.
She says: "We had a grief counselor come to the [writers] room, and we did some research on grief, and there's a lot about how people remember faces. The anxiety of not remembering the faces of your loved ones, misremembering, or actively misremembering things as a self-preservation tactic — all of that became fascinating to us, and we thought that by casting Evan [Peters] in the role, it would not only have that effect on Wanda, but it would have this meta layer for the audience, as well."
If it wasn't obvious enough, the series revolved around Wanda coming to terms with the fact that all of the things in her life aren't what they seem and that she needs to face the harsh truth that her loved ones are gone all while going through the different stages of grief in the process. I believe they executed that really well and I gotta say, I totally miss the show.
The entire first season of WandaVision is available for streaming on Disney+.
