Voltron Live-Action Film Will Reportedly Land at Amazon Studios

A few weeks ago, we learned that a Voltron live-action film is in the works from Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber and it has also sparked a bidding war amongst several studios who are interested in picking up the project which is expected to be an A-list tentpole film. Now, after weeks of talks and negotiations, it looks like the project has finally found a home.

According to Deadline, Amazon Studios is currently in talks to be the home of the Voltron live-action feature film project although a deal is not officially done yet. The story of the film was conceived by Thurber and he will co-write the script with Ellen Shanman. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman will serve as producers alongside Bob Koplar, the head of World Events Productions, the company that controls the Voltron property.

In case you’re not familiar with Voltron, it is an animated series, based on the Japanese anime Beast King GoLion, that first originated in 1984 which is about a team of five space explorers who pilot a giant Super Robot known as Voltron. It spawned several more shows in the past decades including most recently Voltron: Legendary Defender which aired on Netflix from 2016 to 2018.

It is interesting to hear that the project ended landing at Amazon Studios as it means that it is going to be a streaming film instead of a studio theatrical release. However, the advantage here is that it is likely that they will have a bigger budget and more creative freedom since they don’t have to worry about its box office potential. It is also a great addition to the roster of Amazon originals which already has high-profile titles such as The Boys, The Wheel of Time, Invincible, Carnival Row, The Tick, and the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Right now, it’s hard to tell when we will get to see this film since it’s still in its early stages and it will take some time before it heads into production. Thurber is also busy right now working on the Red Notice sequels for Netflix so expect it to take at least a few more years. We should be hearing more details again about the project in the near future.
