Vince Gilligan: El Camino Won’t ‘Slow Down’ for Non-Breaking Bad Watchers

Vince Gilligan had made some groundbreaking television with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and next month will see a whole movie spinoff in the form of El Camino. While some fans like to think that it could be a jumping point to Breaking Bad newbies, Gilligan explains that this film is specifically for the fans and will not hold back to explain things to non-watchers.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gilligan explains:

"If, after 12 years, you haven't watched Breaking Bad, you're probably not going to start now… If you do, I hope that this movie would still be engaging on some level, but there's no doubt in my mind that you won't get as much enjoyment out of it. We don't slow down to explain things to a non-Breaking Bad audience. I thought early on in the writing of the script, 'Maybe there's a way to have my cake and eat it too. Maybe there's a way to explain things to the audience.' If there was a way to do that, it eluded me."

What's more, Gilligan confirms that more than 10 characters from the original show will be making a comeback in the series. We know that Skinny Pete is already in the teaser, but Jesse's idiot friend Badger has also been confirmed for El Camino. We don't know who the other characters are, but I would love to get an update on the White family as well as Marie Schrader. Maybe we can even get some flashback scenes with Saul Goodman or Walter White.

El Camino is said to run for more than two hours, and Gilligan himself promises that it El Camino "looks like a movie. It doesn't look like a show." Seeing that Breaking Bad is already pretty cinematic, I'm curious how Gilligan plans to up the ante with this film.

Catch El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie on Netflix when it comes out Oct. 11.
