Vin Diesel Almost Landed A Major Role In The Lord Of The Rings

The Lord of the Rings is obviously one of the best-selling books ever written, with over 150 million copies sold. Despite the film adaptation having to live up to the same success and higher expectations, Peter Jackson’s LOTR movies performed well on its own. The accomplishment of the film is visibly brought by the actors who played their respective roles.

Given Lord of the Rings' reputation, many actors have tried to secure a role in the on-screen adaptation; one of them is Fast & Furious megastar Vin Diesel. He reportedly auditioned for the role of Aragorn II: Elessar, which he lost to Viggo Mortensen. According to the director, he found Diesel’s audition session compelling but couldn't envision the actor in the shoes of Aragorn.

Despite failing to portray the heir of Isildur, Diesel found the role that he was meant to play in the history of his career. The actor landed Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious film series. Dominic is a street racer and auto mechanic who robs trucks to support his family and his passion for racing, and this very role made Diesel one of the biggest stars he is right now.

With the franchise still doing its run of movies, its box office returns will only continue to rise. Over the years, Fast & Furious paved the way for actors to make their name in the industry, including stars like Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron.

In addition to his Fast & Furious and other memorable films, Diesel is also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having to voice out the cute, one-phrased tree Groot. Recently, DCU fans have also campaigned for the actor to replace The Rock as Black Adam, given that James Gunn previously dropped him for the titular role.

“The number 1 funniest thing that DC could do right now is announce Vin Diesel as the next Black Adam,” user @villainest wrote. See other fans’ opinion below:

Aside from Diesel, several A-list celebrities were considered for the role, including Nicolas Cage, Stuart Townsend, and Daniel Day-Lewis. Some of the other actors who could have been part of the franchise as well are Kate Winslet, Lucy Lawless, Ethan Hawke, Warwick Davis, Sam Neill, Uma Thurman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Liam Neeson.
