The Disney+ K-Drama is based on a Naver webtoon of the same name created by Kim Gyu-sam. Apart from a live-action adaptation on Disney+, Vigilante is reportedly getting a film adaptation from Studio N.

The webtoon follows the story of Ji-yong, a mysterious hooded man who hunts down criminals during the weekends. What makes his story unique is that he is actually a college student training to be part of the police force.

Despite appearing to have it all cut out for him, Ji-yong has a deep-rooted anger toward the judicial system, which failed him when the person responsible for his mom's death did not get the punishment he deserved.

Instead of the maximum punishment, the murderer only received a sentence of 3 years and 6 months. After 17 years, he tracks down the criminal to exact revenge on him.

Although he would have liked to see him as a changed man full of remorse, he finds himself angered by the realization that the murderer continues to be a delinquent. This forces him to seek the retribution denied to his mother years ago.

As a student training to be part of the police, he gets a first-row seat to the injustices that the justice system continues to practice. In response to this, Ji-yong turns to vigilantism to give justice to the poor and defenseless.

In the webtoon, Ji-yong acts as a top student from Mondays to Thursdays. When nighttime comes on the weekends, he transforms into the hooded vigilante seeking justice from criminals who unfairly received a short sentence. He also targets those who continue to be a criminal after getting released from prison.

He manages to get information from the police station and strategize his plan of seeking revenge. And although some see him as a criminal himself, others can't help but see him as a dark hero-- the only light they can rely on from a justice system that has largely failed its citizens.
