Despite all the rancid critic reviews trashing Tom Hardy's first standalone movie as Sony's Eddie Brock, Venom surpassed expectations by succeeding at the box office during its premiere. However, while Spider-Man fans might be excited over the film's success, it looks like Venom's box office haul may actually lessen the chances of Sony turning over Spider-Man's film rights to Marvel Studios for good.
Box office analysts spoke with the Business Insider about the possible outcomes of Venom's box office success, and while the film might mean good news for Sony, it'll definitely mean another tough time for the Marvel franchise.
"If it had failed, there is a chance Sony would have definitely returned to the bargaining table with Disney," Exhibitor Relations senior box-office analyst Jeff Bock told the publication "Now, that's up in the air."
This is alarming news for Marvel fans hoping to see Tom Holland's Spider-Man staying permanently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, Sony might have caved in and allowed Marvel to create films with Spider-Man in it, however, the studio might change its mind after the success of Venom. After all, what is a Spiderverse without Peter Parker? Right?
According to Bock, as long as audiences continue to support Sony's Universe of Spider-Man Characters so that the franchise's films do well despite critic reviews, Disney will most likely be forced to buy Sony to get Spider-Man back the same way it did with 20th Century Fox. Let's hope that Sony allows Holland to stay and complete his Spider-Man trilogy at Marvel before making any rash jumps.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is set for release July 5, 2019.
