Venom made its global premiere on Monday this week, and Sony lifted the embargo on reactions to the film, revealing a slew of negative reviews online.
However, while fans and critics continue to complain about the studio's tone-deaf mess of a movie, it looks like Tom Hardy's Symbiote standalone is still on track for a considerably successful opening weekend.
According to Deadline, analysts still expect Venom to open with a domestic haul of between $60 to $65 million and then a global total debut of somewhere between $160 million to $175 million.
That might not seem like a lot compared to comic book movies from Marvel and DC, however, those are still record-breaking numbers in October box office history. The highest amount that a film ever earned at the domestic box office during an October release was $55.7 million, and that record belongs to Gravity which debuted back in 2013.
If Venom does manage to earn somewhere between $60 to $65 million, then it officially becomes the highest earning October release in box office history. Of course, things might change considering all the negative reactions from fans and critics online. Potential negative word of mouth could also follow once the film makes its way to cinemas on Thursday, affecting its weekend haul.
Not only that, but Venom is competing for attention with Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, A Star Is Born. Starring Cooper and music icon Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born has received overwhelming support from fans and critics, boasting a 95 percent fresh score from Rotten Tomatoes. Let's just cross our fingers and hope that Venom does well this weekend.
Venom hits cinemas Friday, October 5.
