Venom Movie Listed as Horror Sci-Fi, Could Begin Shooting This Fall

Sony Pictures has been developing a Venom standalone film for years, but we haven't heard anything about the Spider-Man spinoff in a long time. However, it was reported earlier this month that the studio has confirmed that the Venom project is still alive, and it already landed a 2018 release date. Now, the film was listed as action/horror/sci-fi and could land a 2018 release date.

According to the film and television production tracking site My Entertainment World, Venom was added to its list of upcoming features, revealing its genre and production date.

The studio hasn't released any plot details about the Venom film but the addition of "horror/sci-fi" could suggest that it might be an R-rated film. If that ends up being true, fans might extinguish hopes to see Venom alongside Tom Holland's Spider-Man, at least under Marvel Studios' family-friendly universe.

Sony hasn't hired a director to helm the Venom project, but longtime Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will oversee the project, and Scott Rosenberg and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Jeff Pinkner will be writing the script.

The Venom movie is set to release in theaters on October 5, 2018.
