Venom has Officially Made more Money than Wonder Woman and GOTG

Everyone was gearing up for the Venom movie to bomb because of the negative critical reception that it got, but the film has actually been a money-making machine and it just surpassed two comic book movie powerhouses.

As per the Exhibitor Relations Co., Venom has just nabbed $822 million at the worldwide box office, making it surpass the likes of Wonder Woman ($821 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy ($773 million).

While a lot of fans were hoping that this movie fails so that Sony would ‘learn their lesson' and give Marvel Studios the wheel, the success of Venom has made the studio more than confident to push forward with their other Spider-Man-less Spider-Man spinoffs. Next up is going to be Morbius with Jared Leto, and the inevitable follow-up to Venom starring Woody Harrelson.

While the Venom movie does have its perks, a lot of people (myself included) thought that it was a huge step back when it came to comic book films. For one, the plot was so simple (and cartoonish on some level), and even the reason for the symbiote teaming up with Eddie was just because he ‘was a loser on his planet like him.'

That wouldn't fly in something as established as the MCU.

While Venom continues to puzzle fans, I guess Sony is feeling more confident now with their spinoff direction. Who knows, maybe the sequel will bomb, just like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Sony will once again be asking Marvel to take over. You can't blame me for being optimistic.

The next Spidey film from Sony is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it hits theaters Dec. 14.
