Ruben Fleischer seems to continue doing good when it comes to working with Sony. After success with his work on Venom and then Zombieland 2: Double Tap, he is now attached to direct one of the studios' longest gestating projects.
According to Variety, Fleischer is now confirmed to take on the helm of Sony's Uncharted movie. He's the final director in a list which includes Joe Carnahan, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight. With Knight leaving because of scheduling issues, hopefully Fleischer will stick around this time—for good.
As of now, Fleischer will be working on a script that has been provided by Iron Man and Transformers writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The story is said to be a prequel to the games, which will follow a young Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) running into his mentor and longtime friend Sully (Mark Wahlberg).
Though video game films don't usually pan out, it's said that Sony is aiming to change the game when it comes to PlayStation Productions. The studio will have more cooperation when it comes to the game developers, and hopefully Uncharted can usher in a new era of movies that are still enjoyable but feel like they pay respect to the source material.
Things are finally looking up for Nathan Drake's onscreen debut, and hopefully the BTS nightmare this movie has been won't reflect on the final product which is the movie itself.
The Uncharted film is aiming to come out March 5, 2021.
