Valve Promises Not To Regulate Games in Steam Anymore, Unless They're Illegal

It looks like Valve is taking a step back from reviewing the content available on Steam. The digital distribution platform is a major part of the PC gaming world, and is the primary way in which PC users get games to play. Although the company is famous for games like Half-Life and Counter-Strike, the incredible success of Steam has even dwarfed their collection of developed games.

Thanks to the popularity of Steam, however, the digital distribution platform has created some problems for Valve. With many games becoming available for the platform, it has become hard to curate content in Steam, especially with a plethora of low-quality games appearing in the platform.

Valve tried to maintain order in Steam and even banned a school shooting game from its platform recently but now, it looks like they're backing off. Valve's Erik Johnson recently took it to a post over on the Steam community pages to discuss what content should be included in Steam going forward. It seems that the answer is that as long as the game isn't illegal, Valve is allowing it to be in its platform.

Johnson announced that Valve has decided that "the right approach is to allow everything onto the Steam Store, except for things that we decide are illegal, or straight up trolling." He went on to say that the company is focused on "building those tools to give people control over what kinds of content they see" instead of curating the content available on the platform.

Over the last few years, Steam was criticized for having a lot of poor quality games, some of which don't work on a technical level. Hopefully, the company will be able to fix this issue with Steam without having to regulate content significantly.
