With filmmaking as an art form, there are always many different gimmicks we can expect, from Christopher Nolan actually crashing a plane in Tenet to Stanley Kubrick mentally abusing Shelley Duval in real life for The Shining. Just in, a sci-fi film has cast the first-ever robot in a lead role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bondit Capital Media is producing a film called b, a science-fiction movie with a $70 million budget which producers claim will be ‘the first to rely on an artificially intelligent actor.'

As for the robot actress in question, Erica was said to have been developed by Japanese scientists Hiroshi Ishiguro and Kohei Ogawa, and she has been taught to act by ‘applying the principles of method acting to artificial intelligence.'

Here's an image of Erica provided by Life Productions Inc.:

Sam Khoze, who is producing the story of b, had this to say about Erica:

"In other methods of acting, actors involve their own life experiences in the role… But Erica has no life experiences. She was created from scratch to play the role. We had to simulate her motions and emotions through one-on-one sessions, such as controlling the speed of her movements, talking through her feelings and coaching character development and body language."

I have absolutely no idea how they plan to pull this off, but I'm definitely curious to get a first look at the movie. With robots already being developed to replace stunt people, I'm wondering how scientists plan to have them actually replace actors.

No release date has been set for b.
