Under the Queen’s Umbrella episode 9, starring Kim Hye Soo never fails to deliver powerful scenes in every episode.
As the drama reaches its second half, viewers witness more tension between the queen, the royal concubines, and the princes who are hoping to be crowned as the next Crown Prince.
Unfortunately, the historical K-drama fell short in viewership rating for its ninth episode.
Under the Queen’s Umbrella Viewership
The ratings in the Kim Hye Soo-led K-drama slightly dropped in episode 9 after receiving a nationwide average rating of 10.0 percent.
Despite Under the Queen’s Umbrella maintaining a double-digit viewership, it is a decrease from its previous episode of 11.821 percent, the highest rating of the entire run yet.

Airing twice a week, every Saturday and Sunday, Under the Queen’s Umbrella is a 16-part episode broadcasted via tvN while subtitles are available through Netflix.
Interestingly, the historical K-drama has a runtime of 1 hour and 10 minutes and is expected to go on air till December 4.
Under the Queen’s Umbrella Episode 9 Recap
The episode began with Queen Dowager Cho playing victim after Queen Im Hwa Ryeong gets the upper hand over the situation.
The Queen tells the King that his mother, Queen Dowager Cho planned an attack against her grandson, Grand Prince Seongnam.
With this, King Lee Ho confronts his mother but she pretends that she has been poisoned by Queen Im Hwa Ryeong.
As seen in episode 8, Queen Im Hwa Ryeong gave the senior royal a
cuckoo pint that served as her last warning. However, she used it and purposely poisoned herself to play victim in front of the King.
She thought that she could manipulate her son but the King has other plans.
One of the highlights of Under the Queen’s Umbrella episode 9 is the Queen’s plan to break the alliance between Chief State Counselor Hwang, her daughter, Royal Consort Hwang, and Queen Dowager Cho.
She revealed to Chief State Counselor Hwang about the senior royal’s plan to pin the attempted murder of Gran Prince Seongnam to the Chief State Counselor and with this, the trust and connection between the two were tainted with doubt.
On the other hand, the Queen is building an alliance with the Defense of War who is also one of the trusted counselors of the King.
With the defense of the war head as the only living relative of former Queen Yoon, she wants him to stay neutral between Chief State Counselor Hwang and Queen Dowager Cho.
In return, she promised him a reward after one of the Grand Princes was crowned as the Crown Prince.

As Under the Queen’s Umbrella continues, one of the heartbreaking scenes in episode 9 is Prince Samso’s plea to her mother.
He returned to the palace and did not finish the contest because he was too weak to continue.
Prince Samso was barred from entering the gates because he was dressed as a commoner.
Amid the commotion, Consort Ko intervened but refused to help her son. Instead, she wanted him to finish the game whatever it takes.
Consort Ko pretended that the man was a beggar and asked the guards to send him out.
Thankfully, Queen Im Hwa Ryeong opened her home for Prince Simso but Consort Ko was furious after knowing that he was hiding at the Queen’s quarter instead of participating in the game.
Thinking that it is one of Queen Im Hwa Ryeong’s tactics, she tells Consort Hwang about Grand Prince Gyeseong’s secret. For her, she wanted the Queen to bleed and be humiliated.
However, she gets surprised after founding out about Prince Simso’s suicide attempt.
Fortunately, Queen Im Hwa Ryeong saw it and was able to revive the young royal.
On the other hand, she explained how she truly cares about Prince Simso even if he is not her son. With this, Consort Ko was grateful for Queen Im Hwa Ryeong’s support despite their rift.
