- Quick Answer: Tom Holland called Sony chief Tom Rothman to delay Spider-Man for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, allowing time to hire director Destin Daniel Cretton and refine the script.
Tom Holland is gearing up for a massive summer box office one-two punch with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey releasing on July 17, 2026, followed closely by Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026. However, in a new interview, the actor detailed the "uncomfortable conversation" he went through to pull off his double duty, and how taking control of his schedule completely altered his professional mindset.
Tom Holland Called the Shots on Balancing Brand New Day and The Odyssey Filming Schedule

The young actor proved he is no longer just a passive participant in his own career, and now knows when to step up and manage a heck of a filming schedule that would have derailed two of the year's biggest blockbusters.
In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Tom Holland revealed he had to have an "uncomfortable conversation" with Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman to delay the production of Spider-Man: Brand New Day so that he could film Christopher Nolan's epic, The Odyssey, instead.
At the time, when Holland was offered the role of Odysseus' son Telemachus, both movies had identical production start dates. Hence, it was crucial for him to call the shots.
"So I said to Chris, like, 'Look, I want to do this movie, but if I'm going to do it, I'm going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation,'" Holland recalled having Sony agree to push the new Spider-Man movie out of respect for both himself and for Nolan.
Holland noted that one of the possible reasons why Sony was "happy to move" is because of Nolan's reputation that "This movie isn't going to go five months over, and we aren't actually going to lose Tom for two years,'" adding that The Odyssey started on schedule and finished nine days early, "Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation."
How Taking Charge in Spider-Man: Brand New Day Changed Tom Holland for the Better

By firmly taking a stance in setting his creative and scheduling boundaries, Holland inadvertently gave the MCU exactly what it needed to breathe new life into Peter Parker's next chapter.
Holland continued that somehow, delaying Spider-Man's production saved the fourth installment, as it opened the door for the MCU film to hire Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton.
"[Cretton] wouldn't have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn't have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now. And I truly believe that we've made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going," Holland said, "So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they're very grateful that it happened."
The Uncharted star emphasized that they Spider-Man 4 had trouble trying to figure out why the fourth installment was being made in the first place, and Destin proved to be "super instrumental in that." Holland added that he would occasionally suggest and exchange ideas with the studio and producers Amy Pascal and Rachel O'Connor on how Nolan works behind the scenes.
"It feels like the beginning of the next chapter of my life," Holland said, "I really feel like a young man now. I have so much amazing stuff happening in my personal life to take me through to the rest of my life, and I feel like I have a new perspective on where I want to exist in Hollywood."
In the meantime, fans can expect Spider-Man: Brand New Day to premiere on the big screens on July 31, 2026, with The Odyssey film set for a July 17, 2026, screening. Stay tuned!
