Tom Holland has played Spider-Man in more live-action films than any other actor in Hollywood and while the fans are still filled with enthusiasm and eager to see what's next for our friendly neighborhood, it looks like the star of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: No Way Home is ready to retire his mask and web-shooters. Well, that's what the press would like you to think, at least.

The British actor recently made headlines after his comment regarding his future as Spider-Man went viral. During a conversation with GQ Magazine, the 25-year-old actor said that if he finds himself playing the iconic Marvel hero in his '30s, he must've done something wrong. Turns out, the "controversial" statement was blown out of proportion, and Holland himself is tired of the press trying to twist his words.

In a new interview with Extra, Holland aired his frustration over journalists who like to take things out of context to benefit the narrative they're trying to impose. Clarifying his previous statement about playing Spider-Man in his 30s, Holland said: "This is just a perfect example of how, like, everything you say is always misconstrued and no one actually speaks the truth. I don’t know what the future of Spider-Man looks like. I don’t know whether I’m going to be a part of it. Spider-Man will always live on in me, and I know that Amy and the studio are keen to figure out what the next chapter of Spider-Man looks like."

"If that happens to be with me, then that’s very exciting; but if it’s time for me to walk away, then I’ll do so proudly. What I was referring to in that interview where I said ‘If I was playing Spider-Man when I’m 30 I’ve done something wrong,’ it’s because I would be taking up an opportunity for someone to come in and change what being Spider-Man means. Spider-Man could be more diverse; it could be a female character – it could be anything. So that’s what I was saying – and thanks to that journalist for changing that, I really appreciate it."

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Tom play Spider-Man for as long as he could because let's be honest, he does a terrific job portraying the character. On the other hand, I also do get his desire to usher in a new era for the Marvel hero in terms of live-action and his selflessness is actually pretty commendable. Well, whether or not Tom plays the character past his 30s remains to be seen but if it does in fact happen, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have any problem with it.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits cinemas on December 17, 2021.
