Tobey Maguire was Originally Considered to Voice Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Though Miles Morales is in the center of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we're also going to be getting a major appearance from original Spider-Man Peter Parker. With Parker being voiced by Jake Johnson in the movie, we almost had the character voiced by the original big-screen Spider-Man: Tobey Maguire.

As it turns out, the film opted not to hire Maguire for Spider-Man as not to confuse audiences. Co-director Rodney Rothman explains to ScreenCrush:

"There was [consideration]. There were many thoughts about where we could put Tobey Maguire and others. I think after this film, those thoughts might have a little more traction. But before this movie, and introducing the idea of the "Spider-Verse" to the audience, I think everybody was afraid that it would just really confuse people. But wow, it would have been fun."

It's worth noting that the teasers do have some nods to Raimi's Spider-Man film, what with Spidey stopping the train, the upside down kiss with MJ, and him stopping a car thrown at a restaurant. There's even a GIF going around of Spidey dancing the same moves that Maguire did in Spider-Man 3.

With the animated version of Peter Parker acting somewhat jaded to being a superhero, I think it's a good idea to give Jake Johnson his own version of the character. I for one, actually like "mean" Spidey, and I can't wait to see more of him when the film comes out.

Catch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters Dec. 14.
