In the latest episode of Titans, we see Beast Boy traversing through The Red, with a voice calling him the “Protector of The Red.” He then lands on top of Mount Kilimanjaro where he meets a mysterious man.

The man claims to have pulled him out of The Red and that he is like Gar, who is one with all beasts who breathe and bleed.

He then goes on to explain that The Red is a force that connects and pervades all animal life in their universe and many others. He continues to explain that it is a place fully alive, one that every beating heart flows into, but only a few chosen can tap into its raw power.

He claims that only Gar can find his way back through The Red.

The mysterious man finally reveals that he was once “Dominic Mndawe”. But ever since the day Mike Maxwell gave him the Helmet of The Beast, there was only “Freedom Beast”.

Furthermore, he explains that beyond tying him to The Red, the ancient helmet prolonged his lifespan. It gave him strength, stamina, and the ability to fuse two creatures into one super-hybrid.

But he says Gar needs no helmet and that he is different from Animal Man, Vixen, or the others tied to The Red, which means he can do more.

Gar then wonders why he can only turn into green animals despite being more connected to The Red than anybody else. Dominic then explains that because Gar’s favorite color is green and that his influence over The Red is astounding.

Dominic shares that the Green Plague that killed Gar’s parents also killed his family, thus, their shared grief fuels them. He then reveals that the disease came from the same lab where the armed guys who attacked them were working.

He further shares that when he wears the Helmet of The Beast, he can hear the apes they took from the jungles, dissected while still alive. Thus, he needs to free the apes and burn the lab to the ground with Gar’s help.

Dominic then tells Gar to see his truth, stop the lab, and then he will be able to travel back through The Red in his own moments.

However, it was later revealed that everything at the lab was an echo of the past as Dominic already destroyed the lab. Dominic then explained that Gar was in The Red all along up until that very moment.

Furthermore, he revealed that the lab was Dr. Niles Caulder’s lab, the doctor who “saved” Gar’s life and experimented on him. It turns out, Dr. Niles released Sakutia on purpose to unlock eternal life because he wanted to tap into The Red.

Dominic then explains that Dr. Niles only needed one person to survive the virus, who would serve as another test subject for his Doom Patrol.

Dominic tells Gar that he is the True Protector of The Red and that Gar should release him from his duties. He also says that The Red needs its champions and that he’s been a champion for decades who has sought Gar for many years.

He also explained that when a person becomes one with The Red, individual relationships lose their meaning because they are above such things. He then tells Gar that protecting The Red is his destiny.

Dominic further explains that Gar is meant to fight alone and be alone because the avatar of The Red is above family and friends. He emphasizes that Gar’s role in the world is too great and important and that he has to give his all to The Red and no one else.

However, Gar refuses to believe that he’s alone because The Red is supposed to connect him to every single living creature on Earth. He agrees to be The Red’s protector, but he chooses not to abandon the people he loves the most, like the Titans.

Gar then decides to go to the Titans as they will save the world together.
