Tim Miller Discusses Cable’s Crucial Role in Deadpool 2

Deadpool was such a massive success that it's no surprise Fox greenlit a sequel even before the film was released in theaters. In fact, the studio probably already had Cable in mind even before Deadpool was finished filming that the character was mentioned during the post-credits scene.

It's no mystery that the Merc with a Mouth would bump shoulders with Cable in at least one movie, but it doesn't really explain why the Deadpool team wanted Cable to meet up with Wade Wilson so soon.

Apparently, Wade Wilson needs Cable for Deadpool 2 because the Merc with a Mouth needs "a straight man" to work with.

In an interview with IGN, director Tim Miller explained this role which Cable would be filling:

Why he was put together with Deadpool… it's the same reason we had Colossus; he's a straight man. And I think Deadpool needs a straight man. Cable is the ultimate, archetypal, silent, strong and cynical warrior, which Deadpool is not.

The reason why Deadpool and Cable's partnership works so well is because the two characters' personalities are entirely different. With Deadpool's wild and vulgar attitude comes Cable's silent and brooding "straight man" personality. This makes Cable's role that much more vital to Deadpool 2 since his reactions to Wade Wilson's jokes will most likely bring the comedic factor to the film.

For this reason, finding the perfect actor to play the pivotal role will be trickier. From the looks of it, the Deadpool 2 team is biding their time to make sure they cast the perfect star for the role.

Which actor/actress would you like to see play Cable in Deadpool 2?
