Thor Writer Reveals Hela Was Supposed to Appear in Early Script

While Cate Blanchett's Hela was introduced as the power-hungry villain in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, the Goddess of Death actually had an opportunity to debut all the way back to the first Thor movie.

Zack Stentz, one of the screenwriters for Thor, revealed in a Marvel Twitter confessions thread that an early version of the script for the MCU film included an appearance from Hela. The scene saw a cameo of the character, where Volstagg reacts to Thor's coronation, prompting Hela to turn around and glare at him, with the Asgardian warrior giving an apology.

Stentz noted that writing partner Ashley Miller made him "take out the joke," which he finds "fortunate" given that Hela was set to debut in Taika Waititi's Ragnarok. You can check out the tweet below!

Taking the scene out was probably for the best. That being said, it's unclear whether Marvel Studios has been saving the Goddess of Death from the very beginning for future films in the franchise. It's possible that if Kevin Feige didn't decide on introducing Hela in Ragnarok, the character would have been used for a humorous brief cameo in Thor, but it could be seen as a waste of a great villain.

Given Hela's fate in Ragnarok, Blanchett won't likely return anytime soon, but there's always a way to make this happen. Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor for Waititi's Love and Thunder, set for release on February 11, 2022.
