Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi to Direct Animated Flash Gordon Movie

Director Taika Waititi has been getting a lot of attention after Thor: Ragnarok and has since been attached to direct the live-action adaptation of Akira. What's interesting is, Waititi is now also attached to a reboot of another classic franchise, Flash Gordon.

According to Deadline, Waititi was said to have been hired by Fox/Disney to write and direct Flash Gordon, but it's possible that he could be attached in some other role. With Ragnarok clearly having influences on the classic serial, it's interesting that Waititi should be involved with the movie. If anything, I think his style is perfect for the campy sci-fi, and this could very well turn out like Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs.

Of course, for now, it's still too early to make sure.

As it stands, Waititi is currently in post-production for his movie Jojo Rabbit, which is a film about a Nazi boy who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl. Funnily enough, Waititi plays an imaginary version of Hitler in the film who is a friend to the lead boy.

After this, I'm expecting he's off to work on Akira. With Flash Gordon under his belt though, it could take years for that movie to come out. I'm sure Waititi would want some kind of breather in between these films.

While I love Waititi as a director, I personally thought that Ragnarok was not his best work. His style really shines with more character-based, personal films, and I just didn't see it with his MCU work. Then again, he already has the experience, and maybe he could do something better with Akira.

Jojo Rabbit is set to come out this Oct. 18, and Akira on May 21. 2021.
