Thor Director Taika Waititi to Reportedly Helm Tower of Terror Movie

A few months ago, it was reported that Disney is working on a Tower of Terror movie based on the popular theme park attraction that would star Scarlett Johansson. But when the actress sued the company in relation to Black Widow's release strategy, the project's fate became in limbo. Fortunately, the case was settled and the project is moving forward again.

According to The DisInsider, they have learned that Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has signed on to helm the film. He boarded the project earlier this year, but when the lawsuit happened, it was unknown what happened to the people involved in the project. After the settlement, they learned that Waititi is still part of the project. Toy Story 4 co-writer Josh Cooley is writing the film although the exact plot details are still unknown except that it is based on the popular Disney theme park attraction.

This would mark another collaboration for Johannson and Waititi as they worked together before in the award-winning film Jojo Rabbit. Then, of course, they are also both part of the MCU. Recently, Waititi directed Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to be released next year.

Waititi has been very busy nowadays as he is attached to numerous projects. He is also set to direct a Star Wars film, a Flash Gordon reboot film, a live-action adaptation of Akira, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series for Netflix, the Showtime limited series The Auteur, the Apple TV+ series adaptation of Time Bandits, and the HBO Max comedy series Our Flag Means Death, which he also stars and serve as executive producer. He also has Next Goal Wins on the can which might release next year. He recently starred in The Suicide Squad and Free Guy.

It should be pointed out that the news has not been reported by the major trades or announced by the studio so we have to take this news with a grain of salt. However, The DisInsider has been mostly reliable in reporting exclusive news so it is very likely to be true.

Since Waititi and Johannson are both busy at the moment, it might take years before Tower of Terror heads into production. Waititi is an interesting choice as a director for the project and he has proven that he is a terrific and creative filmmaker who can do multiple genres, but still has his signature heart and humor. Tower of Terror might lean more into the horror-comedy genre since it is a Disney film after all and, just like other films that are based on their theme park rides, it will surely target the family audience.
