The Witcher Showrunner Details Her Approach to Geralt and Yennefer's Relationship

Netflix's The Witcher series mostly revolves around Geralt and Yennefer, exploring their dynamic as two characters with prolonged lifespans and a crazy past. Since the upcoming second season will likely touch upon how the pair will get along with Ciri, what'll happen between Yen and Geralt?

In a recent interview with the 3rd & Fairfax: The WGAW Podcast, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich talked about her approach with the two characters' relationship, hinting that there won't be a happy ending. "What I like to imagine is that Yennefer and Geralt are both used to doing it one way; they're both sort of perpetual bachelors," she said, comparing their mindset to that of people in high school or early college, with intense romantic feelings but flees out of fear because of being unfamiliar with it.

"Geralt and Yennefer are really like pinballs off of each other in a way," she added. "Even in the books, I don't know that there's really a happily ever after for them."

Hissrich then recalled a monologue from the novel, where Yennefer describes a humble life in which Geralt is a sheep farmer and she bakes and weaves baskets. "It's such a sweet dream, but it's so unrealistic," the showrunner said. "These people are never going to be sheep farmers and basket weavers. They both have this sort of desire to live on this edge of life and death."

In general, her approach to Geralt and Yennefer's relationship is similar to that of how Andrzej Sapkowski's depicted it in the novel series. It's no secret that the show has made a few changes from the material, but Hissrich's comments hint that the pair's relationship won't be straying away that much from the novels.

The Witcher Season 2 is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime in 2021.
