Want to know the official The Witcher remake release date and more details about the highly-anticipated action RPG from CD Projekt Red? While it's too early for the developer to share plenty of details about the remake, we'll share the latest information about the upcoming game in this article.

CD Projekt Red officially announced the remake of the first The Witcher game on October 26, 2022, revealing their plans to develop the game alongside developer Fool's Theory. The announcement was a part of the original game's 15th anniversary.

The Witcher remake is one of the five upcoming games CD Projekt Red announced in October 2022, and previously went by the codename Canis Majoris.

The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, Head of Studio, CD Projekt Red in the announcement.

“Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”

The first The Witcher game was released in 2007 for the PC, and it was the CDPR's debut game. CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory haven't announced an official release date for The Witcher remake yet, but since the project is still in its early stages, it's likely that it won't be released until 2024 at the earliest.

As part of CDPR's announcement, the developer said: "We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details."

Specific details for The Witcher remake are still being kept under wraps, but we do know that while the original game was developed using BioWare's Aurora Engine, the remake is "being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5" by Fool's Theory. The development studio is also helping Larian with "gameplay and tools programming support" for Baldur's Gate 3.

CD Projekt Red is providing "full creative supervision" while several veteran staff who helped make the original The Witcher will be involved in this project.

Some fans are wondering if Doug Cockle, the voice actor who portrayed Geralt Rivia in The Witcher games, will return for the remake. Given the project is still in its early stages of development, it looks like it's still too early to tell if CD Projekt Red will bring him back.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Cockle said that he doesn't know much about the remake of The Witcher, other than it's being developed in Unreal Engine 5, though he says he'd be "there in an instant".

"I know as much as you do about this at the moment," he said. "All I know is that CD Projekt Red has announced that they're going to remake Witcher 1 in Unreal [Engine] 5, and that's what I know. So I don't know if they're going to bring me back in to do re-recording of the dialogue, I don't know if they're going to use dialogue from Witcher 1 as it exists. I don't know."

CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory haven't confirmed any platforms for The Witcher remake yet. The original game was released for the PC, so it's likely that the developers will make it available for the PC. The remake will also likely be released for the latest videogame consoles, but it's still too early to tell at this point.
