The Walking Dead Movie Was Actually Part Of A Studio Bidding War

AMC's The Walking Dead has been nothing short of a success, and it looks like different television studios actually wanted to tap into the franchise.

Last week during the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con International, AMC announced that Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes would be getting his very own movie with a full theatrical run, shocking fans of the apocalyptic drama series. No one was expecting The Walking Dead to actually make it to cinemas because it was never really done before.

However, it seems like The Walking Dead movie was actually part of a bidding war between studios. Universal Studios wasn't the only one interested in the project, it seems.

During AMC's second-quarter 2019 conference call (via The Wrap) AMC Networks President and CEO Josh Sapan said that there were a number of studios that wanted the film rights to The Walking Dead movie.

There was interest fairly widely among studios to do [the movie]," Sapan said. "[Universal's interest] was not unique, singular, and therefore it is a representation and affirmation of strength of franchise."

Right now there's very little information about The Walking Dead film project. The movie doesn't have a release date, and aside from Grimes, no other cast members have been revealed.

Lincoln departed The Walking Dead television series during the show's eighth season. Rick Grimes was last seen on the show wounded and being flown away on a helicopter towards an unknown destination with Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh). Now AMC is making good on its promise that Lincoln would return with his own series of films.

The Walking Dead movie has yet to receive a release date but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
