Fans are about to see the unlikely alliance of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in The Walking Dead spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City. But as the show's set in New York City, it's a big question as to why the two end up there.

AMC announced the coming of the Negan-Maggie-centric spinoff, Isle of the Dead, now Dead City, in March. It will be set over 12 years after the zombie virus outbreak and see the two The Walking Dead stars travelling together in post-apocalyptic Manhattan after being cut off the mainland.

Maggie, Negan's Alliance

The Walking Dead Season 11 saw Maggie and Negan forced to work together and trust each other to save Alexandria from starvation.

They both went on the road to Meridian, despite Negan's fears that Maggie would kill him along the way to avenge her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun), whom he killed with his iconic barbwire-wrapped baseball in Season 7.

Thankfully, Maggie didn't do so after Negan helped to conquer Meridian again and avenge her people whom the Reapers killed. However, Negan decided to go on his own before Maggie had the chance to kill him.

The Unexpected Reunion of Maggie and Negan

After a year, fate brought them back together at Riverbend, where Negan married and expected a child with his wife Annie (Medina Senghore).

From there, Maggie surprisingly told Negan that she was beginning to trust him after he risked his life to save her kid, Hershel Rhee (Kien Michael Spiller), twice.

"You saved him at Riverbend," she said. "Whatever else happens, and whatever else has happened, I will never forget that."

The Reason that Put Negan, Maggie Together in New York

Though they seemed to settle their differences back then, they appeared to be at each other's throats in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

So, what brought them together in the city of Manhattan? It was probably their kids.

Whatever their differences, Maggie and Negan will never let anything happen to their kids, even if it means they must work together.

Cohan herself even teased this side of the story at the recent The Walking Dead panel at New York Comic-Con.

Dead City is about "the most unlikely two people that you would want to see together," she said. "And it makes it very good to see us together because it is the hardest situation that [Maggie and Negan] both have to be in. The need is bigger than the fear."

The Walking Dead: Dead City will be out in April 2023.
