When The CW ordered its first spin-off, The Originals, which debuted in 2013, the Vampire Diaries Universe was further expanded. Later, in 2018, Legacies followed, but at the time this post was written, all three programs had already ended. Julie Plec seems to be prepared for another The Vampire Diaries spinoff, though.

A third The Vampire Diaries spinoff?

Julie Plec, who co-created The Vampire Diaries and its spinoffs, spoke with TVLine about the future of the supernatural realm after the Legacies series finale.

“This is the end of one chapter, but we can use it to launch the beginning of another chapter, which is ultimately what we want to do when all is said and done,” Plec teased. “There’s absolutely hope for the future. [Executive producers] Brett [Matthews] and Kevin [Williamson] and I have an idea percolating in our brains that we just haven’t had the time to put down on the page yet.”

“But we definitely want to do another branch of the tree,” she continued. “It’s just a matter of when I guess.”

While we don't know what Plec, Matthews, and Williamson are up to, there's little doubt that fans will watch any The Vampire Diaries spinoff, especially if it features past characters.

The CW cancels The Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies

The Vampire Diaries finished after eight successful seasons in 2017, while its spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies, regrettably terminated after only a few seasons.

The CW ran The Originals for five seasons, from 2013 to 2018, then Legacies for four seasons until canceling the TVDU show in 2022. Unfortunately, Legacies was one of The CW's numerous cancellations as the network is currently being sold.

On the plus side, network officials told Legacies' producers that cancellation was a possibility. As a result, they were able to be ready for the finale and neatly tie up The Vampire Diaries spinoff.

In the series finale of the second spinoff, Candice King, who played Caroline in The Vampire Diaries, reprised her role as the popular character. And heartbreakingly, she revealed to TVLine that had The CW renewed Legacies for a fifth season, she would have come back for more episodes.

We're crossing our fingers that Caroline Forbes will be a part of Plec's The Vampire Diaries spinoff plan.
