The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Oscar Eligibility Confirmed for Bowser's Song

One of the memorable moments in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Bowser's performance of "Peaches," an original ballad song where the villain expresses his unrequited love for Princess Peach. Jack Black also wrote the song together with the directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond, and John Spiker.

The music video of the song has also become viral online as it garnered millions of views on YouTube. Black himself even starred in another music video of "Peaches" that is directed by Cole Bennett.

Now, it looks like the song might also be chasing for awards glory as Variety has confirmed that "Peaches" from The Super Mario Bros. Movie is eligible to submit for consideration in the Best Original Song category at next year's Oscars.

This is certainly an interesting piece of news since there is a likelihood that we can see the viral song get recognized at the Oscars. While it might be an unusual move, we have also seen them nominate songs from The Lego Movie and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut so the possibility is certainly out there.

The film's synopsis reads: "While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi."

"With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Mario taps into his own power."

Besides Black, the cast also includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Kevin Michael Richardson, and original Mario voice actor Charles Martinet.
