Chris Pratt Charms Super Mario Bros. Fans With Game-Accurate Voice

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of the most highly anticipated movie adaptations of the year, although it received divisive reactions from MCU and Super Mario Bros. fans, seeing that Chris Pratt was not exactly qualified to be a voice actor, nor was his voice fitting to play the titular role. However, a recent interview featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star’s voice sample charmed the fans.

On Twitter, the official BBC One Show posted The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt and Charlie Day explaining the ‘controversial’ change of voicing for Mario. While many have been led to believe that Pratt was simply hired for the sake of what his name could bring to the film’s success, his voice impression in the interview changed the fans’ hearts.

“We were trying to find a way to put that into the movie, but in a way that would be congruent with a storyline,” Pratt said, while providing some high-pitched, Mario-like voices with his iconic lines on the interview.

“Yeah, you can’t say ‘Itsa me’ for 90 minutes,” Day added.

Previously, The Super Mario Bros. Movie co-director Aaron Horvath defended that Pratt is already perfect for the titular character: “For us, it made total sense. [Chris Pratt]’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterized in our film, he’s perfect for it.”

While it remains to be seen on whether or not we’ll be seeing Pratt do the same thing in the film, at least we now know that the actor is indeed aware of the lore and the particular voice pitch Mario has been widely known and iconic for. It would be a shame to not bring the same characteristics alive in theaters upon its release.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie cast includes Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, Sebastian Maniscalco and Charles Martinet, while Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed the film, with Matthew Fogel who wrote the screenplay.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently set to release in theaters this April 5.
