According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Super Mario Bros. Movie broke another box office record last weekend as it placed no. 3 with a gross of $9.8 million. Its worldwide total is now at a whopping $1.248 billion.

As a result, the film was able to pass Incredible 2's numbers and it is now the third highest-grossing film of all time. It is also ahead of the two Frozen films that are currently taking the number one and two spots.

The Illumination/Nintendo film was able to nab the record despite Fast X entering the box office charts and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues to have an impressive run as it now has a total gross of $659.1 million worldwide.

It remains to be seen whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be able to take the number two spot which is still on the cards since the second placer Frozen has a total gross of $1.290 billion.

It won't be surprising at this point if the film will break another box office record very soon and there is no doubt that its performance has been very impressive despite already being available in VOD platforms.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie's box office run sets up an optimistic path for the rest of the animated films that are set to release this year since it is a sign that the family audience is officially back in the theaters again.

Since there are no animated films that were released in the first several weeks of their box office run, it was easy for them to attract a lot of family audiences and they don't have another direct competition until Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrives in theaters on June 2.

Besides setting up an optimistic future for animated films in theaters, it is also an indication that Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo may green-light a sequel in the near future and potentially turn it into a mega-franchise.

After all, the post-credits scene did set up a potential story thread that a sequel can explore and there is no doubt that the audience will be back if ever it does happen.
