As early as December 2019, Netflix has announced that it would produce a Kdrama series based on the 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquility which was written and directed by Choi Hang Yong. Director Choi had described the upcoming series, The Silent Sea, as one that will explore many stories which the short film had not yet contained.
According to Director Choi, the process of finding the answers to a lot of questions is one of the interesting parts of the series. This became the “driving force” behind the expansion of the short film into a series.

The Silent Sea is an upcoming Netflix series set in the future where Earth suffers from a lack of water and food due to being deserted.
The Kdrama will tell the story of space explorers trying to recover resources from an abandoned research facility on the moon, the Balhae Base Research Station.

The Silent Sea was first reported to have started filming in August 2020. Netflix has been dropping hints and teasers of the series during its production, making viewers excited about its upcoming release.
The Silent Sea is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2021. The series will only be available for online streaming on Netflix with English subtitles for easy and comfortable viewing.

After having a short yet impactful appearance at Squid Game, Gong Yoo will portray the character of Han Yoon Jae, the team leader of the space explorers, who has an important responsibility of carrying out a crucial mission with only a little information.
Lee Joon will breathe life into the character of Captain Tae Seok, the head engineer of the team. He volunteers for the dangerous mission despite being an elite member of the Ministry of National Defense to escape the suffocating atmosphere inside the ministry.
Bae Doo Na, on the other hand, will play as an astrobiologist who joins the team with a determination to discover the truth behind an accident at the Balhae Base Research Station.
