The Russo Brothers Discuss Avengers: Infinity War’s Themes And Story

Avengers: Infinity War is one of Marvel's most highly anticipated films of 2018 and while quite a number of set photos have continuously made their way online during the film's production, little has been known about the film's exact story.

After showing off Infinity War's first footage during Disney's D23 last weekend, the film's directors Anthony and Joe Russo went on an interview with Variety and discussed the themes presented in the superhero movie.

According to The Russo brothers, while their Captain America films took on political themes, Infinity War would deal with more universal "themes of fate and destiny and the essence of what it means to be a hero."

"You'll find that INFINITY WAR and the still untitled Avengers movie deal with much larger issues. They move beyond the politics. Those stories were specifically about Captain America, and he's a guy that wears a flag on his shield. We can't help but address current American issues with him. INFINITY WAR deals with much deeper, more universal and more profound themes of fate and destiny and the essence of what it means to be a hero."

This sounds like the film's going to play with the usual "good vs. evil" archetype much like the Star Wars movies and while it sounds a bit conventional, the use of universal themes is a classic treatment for most blockbuster movies. The quote also suggests that the movie will put the Avengers on the edge and that some may even have to end up dying - a sacrifice already suspected by most Marvel fans.

Avengers: Infinity War premieres on May 4, 2018.
