The Roundup, the newest installment of Ma Dong Seok’s The Outlaws, reached a new record and beat Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite.
Years after The Outlaws arrived, the franchise expanded its empire and released the box office hit installment, The Roundup.
The 2022 crime action film depicts detective Ma Seok Do and his police station’s violent crimes squad. They are tasked with stopping crime in the country. But this time, they need to beat Kang Hae Sang, a supervillain who has been doing crimes in Vietnam.
The Roundup premiered on May 18, and it immediately exceeded Parasite nearly one month after its release.
Ma Dong Seok’s The RoundupMade a New Record
The Korean Film Council reported that The Roundup (The Outlaws 2) topped Parasite’s record.
As of June 12, Ma Dong Seok’s newest film recorded 10.5 million moviegoers as it continuously took first place for the fourth consecutive weekend.
It officially beat the 10.3 million moviegoers set by Bong Joon Ho’s award-winning 2019 film. It also broke Frozen and Interstellar’s records despite the movies’ pre-pandemic releases.
With that, The Roundup is now the top-selling May release in Korean box office history.
As of press time, only 28 movies managed to have 10 million moviegoers.
The Roundup Is 2022 Biggest Film
Aside from beating Parasite, The Roundup also made a record by becoming the biggest film this year so far.
Soon after it garnered an over 6.5 million audience, it became the movie with the highest audience record set by the films released this year. It also ultimately became the most-watched Korean film since the disaster movie Ashfall in 2019. The latter had a total of 8.25 million overall.
As Ma Dong Seok’s new movie still has a few weeks to air, it is expected that the numbers will continue to soar higher.
